Institute Activities in Condensed Matter Physics and Biophysics
2006-2007

During 2006-07 our research and visitor programs were focused on six subjects:

  1. Theory of one-dimensional Fermi- and Bose-Liquids
  2. Quantum theory of hybrid structures involving superconductors, insulators, and normal metals
  3. Theory of phase and energy relaxation in mesoscopic superconducting circuits
  4. Theory of electrostatic effects in ion transport in biological ion channels and solid state nanopores
  5. Rate of protein search for specific sites on DNA
  6. Self assembly of viruses

We hosted one workshop in the spring of 2007. "Physics Inspired by Biology" was held on May 4-7, 2007. Prof. Alexander Grosberg of the School of Physics and Astronomy was co-organizer of this workshop with FTPI faculty member Prof. Boris Shklovskii.

In 2007-2008, FTPI will host a workshop on Quantum Magnetism in May 2008, as part of the series on frontiers in condensed matter theory.

The condensed matter and biophysics programs also hosted 19 short-term visitors and speakers, and three long-term visitors during 2006-07.
